Room Planner

See how well your lamps clean the air, and check they stay within safety limits.

Choose a room or set its size

Where the preset sizes come from
  • School classroom, 30′ × 30′ (9 × 9 m): 900 sq ft fits 30 to 36 students at the 25–30 sq ft (2.3–2.8 m²) per student that South Carolina’s school facility guidelines recommend.
  • Conference room, 14′ × 20′ (4.3 × 6.1 m): a 12-person table needs a room of about 14′ × 18′ at minimum and 16′ × 20′ to be comfortable (Find Office Furniture space plan).
  • Living room, 16′ × 20′, and dining room, 12′ × 14′: close to the large living room (15′ × 20′ and up) and medium-to-large dining room (11′ × 14′ to 12′ × 16′) in Punch! Software’s common room sizes.
  • Ceiling, 10′ (3 m) in every preset: higher than the 8′–9′ typical of many rooms (Aerolamp FAQ; 8′ 8″–9′ for classrooms in the South Carolina guidelines above), so enter your own ceiling height if it’s lower.

Drag a lamp to move it. Lamps snap to walls and corners. Drag the round handle to turn it. Every lamp is angled 30° below horizontal and mounted at the height set below, which is also shown beside each lamp. The 30° is a fixed angle the planner uses; our guide says to tilt the lamp toward the opposite corner of the room.

Ozone

–parts per billion (ppb) of ozone added to the room’s air, estimated

Add a lamp to see how much ozone it makes.

Numbers in brackets are air changes per hour: how many times an hour the room’s air is replaced with fresh air. Sources: the EPA Exposure Factors Handbook for homes and Harvard’s classroom ventilation guide for classrooms.

Estimates for planning, not a substitute for a professional safety assessment. Safety uses the ACGIH 8-hour exposure limits (ANSI/IES RP 27.1-22) at head height, 1.8 m (5′ 11″), counting each lamp as if the person were looking straight at it and adding the lamps up, as OSLUV's Illuminate does. Air cleaning for coronavirus and flu uses the airborne lab data in OSLUV's Illuminate, averaged across studies the same way Illuminate does, and assumes the room's air is well mixed. The preset rooms include typical furniture, which shades the air below it; this is included in the air cleaning. Targets of 4 (good) and more than 6 (best) equivalent air changes per hour come from the Lancet COVID-19 Commission (2022) and count on top of normal ventilation. The air purifier comparison assumes one typical $100 portable HEPA purifier, with a clean air delivery rate of 140 CFM (66 L/s). Ozone is a steady-state estimate for the ventilation level chosen in the Ozone card; less ventilation means more ozone.

Calculations from guv-calcs 0.9.0 (MIT licence), the engine behind OSLUV's Illuminate. Coronavirus and flu data from Illuminate 0.6.1 (guv-calcs 0.10.0 database), checked 30 October 2026.
